The Dwelling
Winston-Salem, North Carolina
The Dwelling is a place where God and God’s people meet.
The Dwelling is dedicated to building a faith community that honors the inherent dignity of all people while clinging to the resurrection among us. As a faith community, they celebrate and empower each member to contribute their unique gifts and stories to build God's kingdom. Embracing diversity, they work towards reconciled relationships within ourselves, with neighbors, the world, and God.
Worship
Sunday is the most inaccessible day for many in the Winston-Salem community. Public buses don’t run until mid-afternoon (on limited routes), the public library has a late opening and early closing; the weekday soup kitchens are closed; day shelters are limited.
Working to recast the narrative of welcome, The Dwelling meets each Sunday around God's holy table to feed people both physically and spiritually, gathering first for fellowship and light breakfast, then worship, then a shared community meal following the final blessing.
Whether a traditional gospel hymn, contemporary favorite, spoken word poetry, or even extended silence, worship reflects the diversity of the people gathered. They believe that all in the community are leaders of this gathering and their voices add to the community of faith. Together, members of The Dwelling sing, pray, hear God's word proclaimed, and gather at God's table together.
Showers us.
Water is holy and restorative.
One of the ways The Dwelling preaches the gospel is through the Baptismal Connection of showers. Recognizing the baptismal connections of access to a shower, the most basic human luxury, The Dwelling stewards a mobile shower ministry where persons experiencing homelessness are able to be washed and renewed as a reminder of their belovedness. There is healing and dignity that comes with the gift of water, and The Dwelling, with the help of local partners and volunteers, are stewards of that gift.
Shelterin us.
For over a decade, City with Dwellings (CwD) has led winter emergency shelters, caring for thousands and transforming support for those without housing in Winston-Salem. As CwD shifts to focus on long-term solutions, The Dwelling carried on this important work over the past year by offering warming space, women’s shelter, and moms & kids shelter during the coldest months of the year.
